Resources and reminders as we approach the Remembrance period

The weeks leading up to Remembrance Day are among the most important and visible times of the year for Legion Branches. Across the country, Branches and volunteers are preparing for the Poppy Campaign, organizing ceremonies and creating opportunities for Canadians to honour and remember those who served and sacrificed.

Thank you for the important work you do in your communities to keep Remembrance strong and ensure the tradition continues for generations to come.

Military Headstones in Canada: Who Cares for Them?

We are pleased to share a new reference sheet from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission that helps identify the most common types of military headstones found in Canada. The guide provides simple visual references, along with the appropriate contact information for reporting maintenance concerns. We encourage Legion Branches to share this resource with members and those interested in the care of Veteran and war graves in Canada.

2026 Calendar of Notable Dates

The Memorial Cross (more often referred to as the Silver Cross) was first authorized on December 1, 1919 as a memento of personal loss and sacrifice on the part of widows and mothers of Canadian sailors, aviators and soldiers who died for their country during the war. Today, the National Silver Cross Mother is chosen by the Legion among nominations made by Legion Provincial Commands and individuals to represent the mothers of Canada at the National Remembrance Day Ceremony in Ottawa.

There are still many notable dates left in 2026 that your Branch can promote, commemorate, celebrate or raise awareness.
