Canada’s Privacy Laws and Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) have clear and direct implications for The Royal Canadian Legion.
Legion National Headquarters, Provincial Commands and Branches operate independently. This means each Branch and Command is responsible for following the privacy laws and Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation that apply to its own communications.
Branches should understand their requirements and obligations when collecting, using, storing or sharing personal information, including email addresses, and when sending emails to members, supporters or the public.
Please review the CASL & privacy brochure for more information.

3. Promote Your Branch, Services & Campaigns
Promote your Branch, activities, services, and and national Legion campaigns.
Branch Website and Social Media
Many people look online before attending an event, contacting a Branch, or learning more about the Legion. A simple, current website helps people understand who you are, what you do, and how they can take part.
Branches are autonomous and select their own website providers. Free or low-cost options, such as WordPress.com, can be a good place to start. Branches may also wish to ask local schools, colleges, or community volunteers for help building or updating a website.
Website tips:
- Keep Branch contact information and hours up to date
- Share upcoming events and activities
- Link to Legion.ca where appropriate, including online membership signup and Veteran support services
- Help potential members learn about your Branch and volunteer opportunities
- Use Legion branding consistently
Branches are encouraged to use social media to promote activities, share community involvement, and stay connected with members. Simple, occasional updates can help keep your Branch visible and engaged in the community.
Social media tips:
- Use a public Facebook Page rather than a private group
- Ensure login credentials belong to the Branch, not an individual member
- Post consistently, even if only occasionally
- Share photos, events, commemorations, and community involvement
- Keep posts welcoming and aligned with the Legion’s mission and values
- Respond to messages or questions when possible
Follow and share national Legion social media posts to help keep your members and community update to date on what's happening across Canada.
Media and Public Relations
Use these tips to help share Branch stories, promote events, and build relationships with local media and community partners.
- Share news about events, commemorations, fundraising, and community initiatives.
- Promote Veteran services and support programs.
- Build relationships with local media and community organizations.
- Refer media to Provincial Command or Legion Headquarters when they seek information about the broader organisation.
- Make sure Branch events and partnerships reflect Legion values.
- Review outside bookings, guest speakers, and third-party events carefully.
Why this matters
Your Branch’s reputation affects how members, Veterans, families, partners, and the public see the Legion. Clear communication and thoughtful promotion help protect that reputation and show the positive role your Branch plays in the community.
